Why Next Steps Fitness App?

The Idea

When I started brainstorming business ideas, I knew I wanted to create something meaningful—something that reflected my own personal experiences and addressed a real need in my life. The idea first came to me during a simple daily walk. I was on the phone with a friend, venting about how frustrated I felt wanting to stay active but constantly running into obstacles: not enough time, no convenient place to go, and no one to exercise with. As I looked down at my Apple Watch, I realized how much I enjoyed closing my rings and sharing fitness accomplishments with my friends. That small sense of connection and accountability gave me motivation. It made me wonder—what if there were an entire community built around that same idea of encouragement and connection through activity?

The Challenge

Throughout my life, I’ve always loved being active. I grew up playing sports, so movement was a natural part of my routine. But when I transitioned to college, everything changed. Suddenly, my schedule was unpredictable, and the motivation that came easily before was much harder to find. At the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, we’re lucky to have a free student gym, but the reality is that it’s overcrowded most of the time. Lines for equipment are long, and it often feels more stressful than energizing. For me, that became a major barrier. I didn’t enjoy working out alone, but coordinating with friends was hard because everyone had different schedules—and, honestly, many of them weren’t into working out at all.

Over time, those small barriers piled up. I kept telling myself, “I’ll get back into it next week,” but one week turned into two, and two turned into nearly two years. During that period, I realized that I wasn’t alone in this struggle. So many college students want to stay active but face the same issues—lack of motivation, accountability, or a supportive community. That’s when my idea started to take shape.

I began imagining a platform designed specifically for people like me—students and young adults who want to move more but need encouragement and community. It would combine the convenience of technology with the motivation of shared experiences. Users could track their workouts, set goals, and join micro-communities with others who have similar schedules or fitness levels. These communities could meet in person to walk, run, stretch, or even just check in on each other’s progress. The app would emphasize consistency over intensity, focusing on building healthy habits and social connections rather than competition.

The Importance

For me, this business concept is more than just a product—it’s personal. It represents my own journey of rediscovering balance, discipline, and community. I believe that when people feel supported, they’re more likely to achieve their goals, both in fitness and in life. It is very important for college students to stay active not only for physical but mental health. My vision is to create a space where anyone, regardless of experience or fitness level, can find motivation, accountability, and a sense of belonging through movement.
